Shift Differential
Definition
Shift differential is additional pay to an employee scheduled to work shifts other than 6 AM to 6 PM standard day shift.
Eligibility for Shift Differential
The CSU Salary Schedule indicates shift differential eligibility under the Shift Differential category of the class in which the employee is assigned.

Types of Shift Differential
- Evening Shift - An eligible employee who is regularly assigned to work four (4) or more hours between 6 PM and Midnight (exclusive of overtime) shall be paid shift differential for the employee's entire shift.
- Night Shift - An eligible employee who is regularly assigned to work four (4) or more hours between Midnight and 6 AM (exclusive of overtime) shall be paid shift differential for the employee's entire shift.
Reporting Shift Differential
On Miscellaneous Pay Form enter appropriate Payment Earnings ID and employee's shift differential hours. The TRC defines the calculation for shift differential pay.

Overtime on Shift Differential
For some bargaining units, if an evening or night shift employee works overtime, their overtime rate is based on their regular rate of pay plus the shift differential he or she receives. (Refer to Collective Bargaining Unit Agreements referenced in the Shift Differential Table above.)
