Heat Illness
Employees working in outdoor places of employment or in other areas at times when the environmental risk factors for heat illness are present, are at risk for developing heat illnesses if they do not protect themselves appropriately.
The purpose of the Heat Illness Prevention Program is to increase employee awareness regarding heat illness symptoms, ways to prevent illness, and what to do if symptoms occur.
Elements of the program include:
- Access to water
- Access to shade
- Employee training
Indoor Heat Illness
New regulation, supplementing the existing Outdoor Heat Illness Prevention Program. Applies to indoor workplaces when the indoor temperature is greater than 82°F.
Requirements
- Provide access to potable water that is fresh, suitably cool, and free of charge
- Cool-Down Areas- provide access to at least one cool-down area which must be kept
at
a temperature below 82°F (unless not feasible). - Cool-Down Rest Periods-Encourage workers to take preventative cool-down rest periods
- Monitor workers for symptoms of heat-related illness
