Ionizing Radiation Safety Program
The purpose of the Ionizing Radiation Safety Program is to ensure that radioactive
materials and all sources of ionizing radiation are used safely at the University
in compliance with all state and federal regulations.
This task is carried out by:
- Maintaining an inventory of all radioactive materials that come on campus;
- Regularly surveying all laboratories to ensure that adequate control is maintained
of all radioactive materials;
- Conducting periodic training of all personnel who may reasonably come into contact
with radioactive material or ionizing radiation;
- Ensuring that all radioactive waste is properly stored and disposed of.
Anyone who wishes to use radioactive materials or ionizing radiation at the University
must obtain the required user and project authorizations. This may be done by contacting
the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
All radioactive material arriving on campus must be received and inspected by the
RSO before it is released to the ordering party. The RSO should be notified in advance
of all such orders.
In the event of an accidental release of radioactive material during regular business
hours, IMMEDIATELY call the RSO. During non-business hours contact Campus Police by
dialing 911 from a campus phone or 559.278.8400 from a cell phone - Campus Police
will notify the RSO. The RSO will assist the user in containing the material and conducting
any necessary decontamination procedures.

Non-Ionizing Radiation Safety Guidelines
The non-ionizing radiation safety guidelines are made available to the campus community
to provide information to concerned individuals about how to recognize if non-ionizing
radiation may be present and what form it is in; what the potential effects of exposure
to various types of non-ionizing radiation may be; and finally what steps may be taken
in order to reduce exposure to non-ionizing radiation.
For assistance or additional information, please contact the campus RSO by calling
559.278.7422.

Lasers
The Laser Safety Program is intended to provide for University employees, students
and visitors who use lasers with a safe laser use environment. This task is carried
out by:
- Registering and classifying all lasers to determine their specific safety requirements;
- Providing training for all individuals who work with or who routinely come in contact
with lasers; and
- Conduct periodic safety inspections in the laser laboratories.
Anyone who wishes to use a laser may be required to submit a laser registration form,
conduct a laser safety evaluation and complete any required laser safety training;
depending on the classification of the laser being used. These requirements may be
satisfied through the assistance of the campus Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
In the event of an emergency involving the use of lasers, the LSO and/or the Office
of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management (EHS/RM) must be notified immediately.
Laser emergency response procedures are available from EHS/RM.
For assistance or additional information please contact the main office at 559.278.7422.
