Student Health and Counseling Center Re-Roof

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is the Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC) being re-roofed?
    • Due to ongoing leaks and challenges with the current roofing material, the SHCC roof is being replaced with stronger, more durable materials that will resolve these issues for decades to come.

  • What work is being done?
    • The roof is being upgraded to PVC (polyvinyl chloride) that is a single-ply material that carries both Energy Star and Cool Roof ratings.

  • How will the re-roof impact the SHCC community?
    • There will be five potential impacts to the SHCC occupants:
      • Construction Noise- There may be noise as they demolish the old roof and install the new.
      • Odors- Certain adhesives will be used and may produce an odor. Please call Environmental Health & Safety at 559.278.7422 so we can mitigate if the odors are strong.
      • Parking- Due to the rotation of work around the roof, there may intermittently be a few stalls unavailable while they carry materials to the roof. This should only last a day or so.
      • Roadway- Shaw Frontage Road will be utilized as a laydown area, so traffic may be re-routed through the parking lot in that area. We have been in contact with Traffic Operations regarding these workarounds.
      • Golf Carts- It’s possible that the carts may need to be relocated temporarily due to equipment mobilization near the building. We will coordinate with the administrative offices to stay ahead of these contingencies.

  • How long will the re-roof project take?
    • It is anticipated to take place between October of 2022 to January 2023.

  • What time of day will the construction team be working?
    • They will generally be working from 6:00 or 7:00 AM to 3:00 or 4:00 PM depending on weather and daylight.

  • Will there be utility shutdowns?
    • We do not anticipate any planned utility shutdowns. With new construction, there is a level of unpredictability that may need to be mitigated on a case-by-case basis. The SHCC is recognized as a critical, sensitive building, so if you notice any outages, please reach out to 559-278-2373 right away so we can respond to any unexpected issues. We will communicate any issues as they arise.

  • Is Facilities Management working with anyone from the SHCC?
    • We are coordinating with the SHCC administration, who will help us disseminate communications as needed to keep you informed on the progress of the project.

  • How will we receive updates?
    • Incremental communication will be sent via email to the SHCC administrative staff, who will then distribute the messaging through the building listserv.

  • If we have questions, comments, or concerns, how should we reach out?
