Campus Facilities Master Plan

A campus facilities master plan is the visionary framework for transforming Fresno State's physical spaces. Building on the momentum of our most recent plan, we are crafting a new master plan in partnership with the esteemed design firm, SmithGroup, to support our academic and strategic goals. This updated roadmap will outline how the university will assess and recommend improvements to academic and campus life, sustainability, infrastructure, mobility, and open space while establishing project priorities for the next 10+ years.

Why it matters

Our facilities are essential to our future; they are spaces where human potential is nurtured, purpose is defined, and innovation is unlocked. Thoughtfully evaluating and planning our facilities ensures Fresno State can provide equitable access to modern technology, foster environments for hands-on learning and cutting-edge research, support athletic competition at the highest levels, and adapt to the evolving needs of our campus and the broader Central Valley community for generations to come.

Process timeline

The Campus Facilities Master Plan will unfold over roughly 18 months in three key phases, each building upon the previous one to deepen understanding and refine direction.

Understand

Fall 2026 – Winter 2027
Through guided listening sessions, our planning partners gain a deep understanding of our shared goals, aspirations, and current challenges for our existing campus facilities and spaces. They also conduct a comprehensive assessment of our current state, including facilities condition analysis, space utilization studies, infrastructure and utilities evaluation, landscape analysis, and sustainable opportunities identification.

Explore

Spring 2027 – Fall 2027
With a solid understanding of our current conditions, our planning partners will test different ways to organize campus uses, accommodate new building footprints, enhance systems, and enliven campus spaces. Through collaborative exploration, they evaluate potential investment opportunities and determine the preferred approaches.

Realize

Fall 2027 – Spring 2028
The strongest ideas are combined and emerge into the Campus Facilities Master Plan. The plan outlines the character, location, and scale of new development, renovation, reuse, or re-purposing of space. It also recommends improvements to circulation, parking, open space, infrastructure, and resiliency. The final plan is a flexible framework to guide our facility investments and support our collective vision for the next decade.
